Homes, like most things, need routine maintenance and repairs throughout the year to stay in top shape. While some of the issues may seem small, if left unresolved, they could become much worse and extremely costly to fix. An organized, thought-out plan of scheduled maintenance can make this task much easier and save you loads of time. Check out the following tips for up-keeping a hassle-free home.
Preparing for Emergencies
No matter how safe you try to make your home, accidents can, and probably will happen. It is very important to know the locations of controls like:
~Water shut-off valve
~Main breaker box
~Main shut-off for heating fuel
You should always keep a wrench in a designated place for shut-off valves. You should also have a fire extinguisher around the kitchen area.
Moisture is an enemy of your home. You want to keep it away to prevent serious issues like termite infestation, growth of mold, and foundation cracks. You can help your home stay dry by doing the following:
~Check your attic for any roof leaks. This will prevent any rain water from damaging your ceiling and walls too badly. This should be done at least twice a year. If you find a leak, contact a roof waterproofing and repair company to make quick repairs.
~Get some gutters installed on the sides of the roof to direct the rainwater to the drains and away from your foundation.
~Routinely remove leaves from gutters especially gutters made of wood. This will prevent wood rot as well as rusting on metal gutters.
~When taking a hot shower, remember to open your bathroom window. Too much condensation can lead to the growth of mold and mildew.
~Use a hose to clear up those clogged gutters of debris. If that doesn't work, pull out the plumber's snake to get the job done. That thing never fails!
~If you use a sprinkler system, be sure the spray range doesn't reach your porch/deck. A build-up of wood rot would be a major attraction to wood termites.
Weekly, Monthly, and Seasonal Maintenance
While some tasks are better done on a weekly basis, others should only be necessary during certain times of the year. Below, you'll find the lists of maintenance tips and when you should be completing them.
Regular home maintenance is a solid strategy to make sure no serious issues arise without your knowledge. General up-keep lets you handle the issues before they become serious (and expensive). You can also take pride in knowing that your home is safe and well taken care of.
