An At-Home Spa Get-Away

Shelter at home. Quarantine. Work from home. Virtual learning. With so much going on in your very own home and so little opportunity to get away, it's especially important to practice self-care. For those who can't escape to a Spa for the day, I have a simple solution. Create your own at-home spa!

The luxury of a Spa experience can be captured in 5 peaceful elements:

  • Lighting

  • Nature Accents

  • Organic Textures

  • Aromatics

  • Clean, Uncluttered Decor

Lighting is essential and should be soft and soothing. Natural light is great and easy to control with blinds, sheer window treatments or window films. Candles, lamps, and sconces warm mood lighting. For overhead fixtures, consider installing a dimmer switch so that you can control the power of the light it puts out.

Nature Accents bring the serenity of the outdoors into your room. Live accents are encouraged. Indoor plants are proven to improve air quality. However, if your thumb is less than green you can supplement with faux plants. Succulents, ferns, bamboo and orchids and other cut flowers are Spa favorites.

Organic Textures deliver the feel of the Spa! Think high-quality cotton towels, plush spa robes and slippers, and organic loofas. Spas often incorporate woods like teak and cedar into the functional and aesthetic decor, such as wooden bath mats, stools, and bath caddies.

Aroma has a powerful effect on our mood. You are not limited to "standard spa" scents, like lavender and chamomile. Choose the aromas that when experienced, create a full body relaxation. Experiment with essential oils, adding them to your bathwater for a truly immersive experience. Candles, wax melts, and diffuser oils can also fill the room with your favorite smell. For a luxury experience, hang eucalyptus from your shower head!

Lastly, having a clean, uncluttered space is essential to creating a spa-like experience. Clutter distracts the mind. Make certain only the most restorative, relaxing items are visible. If you enjoy having your beauty and wellness products displayed, use class apothecary jars and baskets to keep an air of tidiness.

Keep in mind, the quality of the care we give others is related to the care we take of ourselves. Creating a spa-like experience is an over-indulgent activity. It's a kindness that you can show yourself!
